Series vs parallel - which is right for your system?

Connecting multiple solar panels means choosing between series or parallel wiring. The right choice depends less on your controller and more on one question: will anything ever cast shade on just one panel?

Series wiring
Voltages add - current stays the same
3 x 18V 6A panels in series:
Output = 54V at 6A
Connect + terminal to - terminal of the next panel
Slightly better in uniform low light - overcast days, early morning, late afternoon
One shaded panel drags down the output of the entire string
Requires a Victron SmartSolar MPPT controller
Best for: ground-mount, sheds, or a roof genuinely clear of vents, AC units and antennas

Parallel wiring
Current adds - voltage stays the same
3 x 18V 6A panels in parallel:
Output = 18V at 18A
Connect all + terminals together, all - terminals together
Each panel keeps producing independently if another is shaded
The right default for most caravan and 4WD roofs
Works with MPPT or a lower-cost PWM controller for small systems
Best for: caravan and 4WD roofs with an AC unit, antenna, vent or roof rack
💡 Our recommendation: most caravan and 4WD roofs in North Queensland have something on them - an air conditioner, antenna, vent, or roof rack - that can throw shade across a single panel at some point in the day. Even one partially shaded panel in a series string pulls down the output of every panel in that string, so for the typical 1-2 panel setup we default to parallel wiring. Reserve series for installs where the roof is genuinely clear, or for shedded and ground-mounted arrays with no obstructions.
💡 Running 3 or more panels? The best of both worlds is a series-parallel hybrid - wire pairs of panels in series, then combine those pairs in parallel. You get the higher voltage MPPT prefers, while a shaded panel only takes out its own pair rather than the whole array.
